But mushrooms are still a ‘new’ substance too many of us, and it is important that you know the basics. Here’s the thing – when you buy mushrooms quite often they come in bulk. This isn’t a complaint – but it is important to know how to make them last.

Proper Storage To Keep Your Shrooms Fresh

In our post today we will take you through the best ways to store your mushrooms so that you keep them in prime shape for a long period of time. Our guide will take you through refrigeration storage to covering in chocolate – options for everyone!

Storing Your Shrooms

If you are an experienced shroomer, you most likely already know that shrooms are most potent when they are fresh. But, keeping your shrooms fresh is a difficult task. No matter the type – the reality is that fresh mushrooms do not stay viable for long. Since this is the case – it is highly recommended that you dry your mushrooms as soon as they are picked. But we may be jumping ahead here – you may be asking, where do I get started? Let us help!

It is important that before you get started you have all of the necessary tools.

What you need to dry your shrooms

  • A brush
  • Disposable gloves
  • A large sheet pan or wire rack
  • A gentle kitchen towel
  • A fan
  • Clean mason jar with lid
  • Packets of food grade silica

You will also want to make sure that you have a clean and sterilized place to work. You want to make sure not to contaminate those wonderful mushrooms you just picked.

How To Store Fresh Shrooms

Fresh mushrooms are sensitive – all fresh mushrooms are at risk of mold, contamination and oxidation. So let us get started – we highly recommend that you wear the disposable gloves when you are picking your mushrooms. By doing this you are guaranteeing that you are not contaminating the fresh shrooms with any pathogens. If you don’t want to use gloves – washing and sterilizing your hands is another option. After you have your shrooms, then you will use your brush to remove any dirt or debris.

Place the somewhat clean mushrooms in a paper bag or light woven basket. If you think there is still too much dirt on the mushrooms you can run them under a gentle stream of cold water and then lay them out flat on a kitchen towel. Allow them to air dry for 20 to 30 minutes , and then gently pat them dry with a towel. Now that the dirt and debris is gone and the shrooms are generally dry you can move them to the fridge.

Can I store Shrooms in the Fridge?

If drying your shrooms is not an option – than you can always go for the fridge option. Placing them on an unbleached paper towel inside a paper bag in your fridge should do the trick. You want to make sure the paperbag is tightly shut around the shrooms to avoid decay. Fresh mushrooms can be stored like this in the fridge for 5 to 10 days. We recommend checking for any signs of decay, like mold, after 3 days. All mushrooms have a different shelf life based on the moisture level – so it is better to be safe. This style of storage is best suited for short term storage.

How To Store Wet Shrooms

It shouldn’t be a surprise when we say – wet shrooms have a shorter shelf life. Wet shrooms equals more moisture and therefore a higher chance of decaying. Before you put your wet mushrooms in the fridge you will need to pat them dry with a towel. Remember to be gentle! The over-handling of mushrooms can damage them and reduce their potency.
